Getting ready to start a GLP-1: what to do before your first dose

Waiting on a prescription or a first appointment? The weeks before you start a GLP-1 are useful time. Here is how to prepare so the first month goes smoothly.

Whether you are waiting on a prescription, a Part D plan decision, or your first appointment, the weeks before you start a GLP-1 are not wasted time. A little preparation now makes the first month smoother and gives your clinician a clearer starting point.

Capture your baseline

Once treatment begins, change happens gradually and it is easy to lose track of where you started. Record your starting weight, ideally at the same time of day and on the same scale you will keep using. Note how you feel now, including your usual energy, appetite, and how often food is on your mind, since these often shift first and a scale will never show them. A rough sense of your protein, water, and movement on a normal day gives you something to build from.

Set up two habits early

The two things that matter most in the early weeks are easier to start before you need them. Appetite drops once you begin, which makes it easy to undereat protein, the nutrient that protects muscle while you lose weight, so practicing a protein-forward breakfast now means it is already a habit when your appetite fades. Lower appetite also means drinking less without noticing, and mild dehydration can make early side effects feel worse, so keeping water within reach is a simple habit to build in advance.

Write down your questions

Appointments move quickly, and a short list written beforehand helps you leave with answers. A few worth considering: which medication and format are we starting with, and why; what side effects are normal, and what should prompt a call; how and when will we check whether it is working; and if I qualify through the Medicare Bridge, what are the pharmacy and cost steps.

Know what the first weeks look like

Going in with realistic expectations takes a lot of the worry out of starting. Early on, many people notice nausea, fullness coming sooner, mild fatigue, and changes in digestion. Most of this is expected and tends to ease as your body settles. The goal in the first weeks is not to push hard. It is to notice what is happening and keep a record you can bring to your clinician.

How Titra helps

Titra gives you a place to set all of this up before day one. Log your baseline weight and habits, start a protein and hydration routine, and have the app ready to track doses and side effects the moment you begin.
